How to Score Bottles

All Buffalo Trace Distillery whiskeys are distributed &ldquoon allocation.&rdquo This means there&rsquos a specific number of bottles allocated to each state throughout the year across its whole catalog. This is done to ensure retailers, restaurants and consumers in every state get a shot at some.

Your best shot at nabbing prized bottles boils down to being a good customer, which starts with communication. Frequent the shops in your area and talk to the person behind the counter. Ask when they usually get the bottle you&rsquore hunting for and reward information with your patronage. Remember that if you&rsquore looking for something (especially a Buffalo Trace Distillery whiskey), others are too &mdash they don&rsquot have to give you information, but they may be more inclined to do so if you&rsquore a regular.

Beyond that, know your release periods. Bottles of Pappy are allocated October 1 and typically hit shelves mid-October to early December. The Antique Collection is also distributed in the fall. Most other regularly distributed bottled arrive on shelves in the first week of the month.


Ferrand Cognac Legendaire

This new cognac from French producer Maison Ferrand is special in a few regards. First of all, this limited release (500 bottles annually) is made up of a blend of eaux-de-vis, some of which date back nearly 100 years aging in the cellars beneath the manor. The blend is then finished in what is called a Zebra barrel, in which some oak staves have been replaced with new ones to impart a dose of tannins and other flavors to the cognac that would not ordinarily be there. As expected with a luxury spirit like this, the presentation is stunning. The decanter was made by French crystal maker Waltersperger and it comes housed in a wooden box with a whimsical hand door knocker springing from the front. Look for notes of baking spice, blackberry, anise, cocoa and vanilla in every sip.

Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrels

Exquisite woodworking can seem like a dying art in the age of mass production, but for James Broyhill, it’s in his blood. Sound like a familiar name? That’s because James is the great-grandson of the founder of Broyhill Furniture Industries, a North Carolina landmark furniture empire for over a century. Today, James Broyhill has taken the soul of his family’s history and combined it with a fresh new tradition. He owns and operates a Charlotte-based woodwork company, Heritage Handcrafted.

Broyhill put in his time in the corporate world before leaving investment real estate in 2012 to pursue his craft. The Winston-Salem native learned woodworking at an early age from his maternal grandfather. All these years later, Heritage was born from those lessons in the true spirit of the all-American small business: a little backyard tinkering Broyhill did one day with some tools and an old whiskey barrel. That inkling of an idea to use wood from barrels just happened to stick.

Fast-forward to 2012, and Broyhill had begun creating and selling Heritage Handcrafted’s richly detailed, exclusive pieces. Today, he builds from his local Charlotte workshop and sells nationally – everything from benches, chairs, and sinks to light fixtures and upscale accessories. Heritage is a careful mixture of the Broyhill family legacy of furniture with some unexpected twists as well items like artisan gift boxes, cufflinks, and shaving kits.

Broyhill’s most recent venture is a nod to another long-standing empire – Pappy & Company, the owners of the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery in Kentucky’s capital. The partnership between the two resulted in a super-exclusive new line of custom wood gift boxes. Broyhill says he was “inspired by Pappy’’s similarly long tradition of hand-crafting, and “wanted to create a memento that merged the great histories of both companies and could be passed down through generations.””

The process is fine-tuned. Once Heritage Handcrafted receives barrels from Pappy Van Winkle – barrels originally used for aging Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23-year and 20-year bourbon – each one is broken down. Using hand and power tools, individual barrel staves get separated by similar widths and the staves are then milled down. Broyhill takes each box, lines it with velvet, and fills it with crystal decanters, hand-blown glassware, and Pappy cigars.

With the history of woodwork so ingrained in his background, it’’s Broyhill’’s attention-to-detail with Heritage’s choice of wood that has made his line so distinctive, setting it apart on both the local and national stage.

Each piece comes from reclaimed wood of a variety of sources.

He chose to partner with area distilleries, wineries, and specialty retailers to source wood from century old barns and various bourbon, whiskey, and wine barrels. The resulting aesthetic is rustic: aged wood with rich grain and distinct coloring that works as well on an Adirondack chair as on a pair of cufflinks.


Scoring the Elusive Pappy Van Winkle

“Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve is often regarded as one of the finest bourbons in the world, and is rare to find on the market due to its very low production and high demand. Bourbon aficionados have shown up in droves to get a small chance in a lottery to purchase some. It has been called ‘the bourbon everyone wants but no one can get.'”

This past Saturday, November 12, Liquor Barn locations in Louisville (Hurstbourne, Springhurst, and Middletown), Lexington (Hamburg and Beaumont), Danville, and Bowling Green were participating in a lottery for the chance to purchase a bottle of Pappy.

Some of you may remember back in October, when I won two bottles in the lottery for the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, well I wanted to try my luck again with Pappy. The lottery for Pappy worked exactly the same way. Your place in line has no bearing on whether you will get a bottle or not, since the drawing is random. There were unlimited tickets given out between 9am to 10am. Promptly at 10:05am, the lottery begins. Then if your number is called, you can choose between what they have left.

I thought the lottery for the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection was crazy, but it didn’t even come close to the Pappy lottery. We arrived around 8:30am after eating at Wild Eggs (that seems to be our tradition for Saturdays and bourbon lotteries). The line ran along the building, down the entire length of the parking lot, and started wrapping around the nearby car dealership. Also, keep in mind that it wasn’t even 9am, and that they would be giving away tickets until 10am. It took us about twenty minutes to even get to the front door to get our tickets.

It was extremely cold outside, but still worth it, to even have a chance at getting a bottle. Some people go their entire lives and never get a bottle, or some people’s only chance is paying extravagant prices on the secondary market. Others have been on waiting lists for over a decade.

Buffalo Trace, which is the distillery that produces the Pappy bourbons don’t release the exact number of bottles produced, but it is extremely limited. They estimate that there are around 6,000 to 7,000 cases of Pappy produced each year, which is around 72,000 to 84,000 bottles between all the different kinds of Pappy. Some people may think this is a lot, but it is just peanuts in comparison to Jim Beam, who produce 7 million cases each year, which is 84 million bottles. So, you are pretty lucky if you can snag a Pappy bottle, because the odds are not in your favor.

There were approximately 1300 people there and probably around 200 bottles total. It took about two hours to give away every single bottle. My husband’s ticket was one of the first 30 called. They still had the Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year when his number was called, so that’s what he got. Since I still had my ticket, I stayed there patiently waiting to see if we were going to be lucky again and get a second bottle. Might as well, right? Well, it paid to be patient, because my number was called at the very end and I got the very last bottle. I then was given a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year.

I thought it was so crazy that for the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection lottery, we won two bottles, and then for the Pappy Van Winkle lottery, we also won two bottles. What are the odds. Talk about being lucky!

Okay, so we all know that Pappy Van Winkle is a marketing phenomenon - impossible to find, super expensive, a true unicorn spirit - but here's the other truth - it's really good! I have had the 20 and the 23 and honestly I'm not sure I could tell them apart in a blind tasting - and certainly no way after a glass or two! So if you get the chance to try one of these bourbons just once you will not be disappointed - drink them neat - don't dilute the flavor and its all there - the vanilla, the carmel notes, the deep flavor and the amazing finish- drink a glass with a great friend - it will be a memory you always savor - Pappy is a lot of hype, but its also pretty amazing stuff!

I have had the 20 and the 23 and honestly I'm not sure I could tell them apart in a blind tasting - and certainly no way after a glass or two! So if you get the chance to try one of these bourbons just once you will not be disappointed - drink them neat - don't dilute the flavor and its all there - the vanilla, the carmel notes, the deep flavor and the amazing finish- drink a glass with a great friend - it will be a memory you always savor - Pappy is a lot of hype, but its also pretty amazing stuff!


Pappy Van Winkle Is About to Get That Much More Rare

If you're preparing for this year's annual release of Van Winkle bourbons — which includes the brand's illustrious Holy Grail bottle, Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve Bourbon 23 Year Old — you're about to have a bad day.

As the annual countdown towards Pappy's release continues, Van Winkle's distillers announced Wednesday that the brand is only able to release about half the number of bottles that they did in 2014. But it's not entirely the distillery's fault. If you're looking for answers, they come in some combination of science, fate, and global warming.

Bourbon is aged for a predetermined number of years in oak barrels. During the time it sits maturing, a barrel loses a percentage of its total volume to evaporation each year (often referred to as the "angel's share"). More is lost each year, at a rate of about 5-6 percent according to many distillers in Kentucky. So, a barrel of 23 years of age has significantly less volume than one only 3 years of age. "Many of the 53 gallon oak barrels often yield less than 20 gallons," explains Kris Comstock, bourbon marketing director for Buffalo Trace, which produces Van Winkle. And since they can't make more of something produced 20 years ago without a time machine, the total available stock depletes significantly every year.

If they want to put more whiskey on shelves, they have to draw from older barrels to make up the difference. "The problem is, if you take 16-year-old bourbon to supplement the 15-year-old bottles, you're shooting yourself in the foot," Comstock says. "Then there's less for 20 and 23-year-old bourbon a few years later." In that case, you'll just have to wait.

Sometimes bad things happen to good barrels. Whether it's a leak, a few bad wood staves that taint the product, or unseasonably hot summers that increase evaporation, some portion of the stock will age slower than the rest, and taste worse because of it. It happens. The problem for the Van Winkle bourbons is it happened with more barrels this year. Comstock says there's no one reason to explain the losses. He pointed to "high standards of quality," which probably means that the number of usable barrels was much lower.

Comstock also wouldn't comment on the actual production numbers, or the specific number of cases lost this year, but the brand issued a release stating that the losses across the 15, 20, and 23-year-old whiskeys could be "as much as half" of the total production. For the distributors they sell to, it's going to be a difficult process re-portioning the allocations.

Here's what it means for you:

If you have a good relationship with a retailer, the best option is to reach out and try to secure your bottle now. If you had a lucky spot where you could sometimes grab a bottle, you're probably already out of luck. And if you're hoping to start your search now, don't bother.

In restaurants, scarcity means higher prices. We've seen the cost at more than $100 a pour in Kentucky, where they're most likely to get the most stock. If you want to try it somewhere like New York or Las Vegas next year, you'd be better off buying a case of something else.

Theoretically, buying from dealers should be twice as difficult, and the aftermarket cost would be twice as much. But people who have stocked Pappy for the past few years will be looking to sell their bottles off this year for a bigger cash out, because their supply didn't go down and demand has certainly gone up.

Comstock emphasized that the aim was keeping quality standards high, rather than just pumping out bottles to meet the market. The company refuses to lower their threshold, and to their credit they continue to win awards and make great bourbon. It just means that to try their product, you're going to have to really, really want it.
